Okay so this is a total rip off of this amazing woman who does 101cookbooks. One of my favorite food/recipe/cooking blogs/sites. But I had to put these in because I was worried I would forget them and this blog is the one thing that really helps me to keep track of important things.

Second: Rhondal McKinney, Amazing, dark, work. I couldn't pull an image but I mean regardless how could I choose?

This is your year.

I've been seeing Alejandro Cartagena's work everywhere. What with PDN's 30 photogs. to watch and Critical Mass in 2009 why wouldn't he be in high circulation. Loving this work.

A little piece to Critical Mass 2010 though. Seventy five dollars to submit, really? Then $200 smackers if you get passed the first round? Shouldn't that be reversed? Although, I will say they do select some great people. I am so torn!

Let's just focus on the serenity of Alejandro's photograph.

Another consistent obsession, Eastern European literature and folklore. Segue to Annick Ligtermoet, a photographer who lives and works in the Netherlands. In particular, I am in love with her "Zapovedniy" series. A set loosely based on mysterious creatures, and the people who live with/are them.

Issue 10 of Fraction magazine is online now. In it is Photographer Phil Toledano. A New York based photographer. His images that I find most striking are those of elective surgery patients. They are not on his site but they are in Fraction. The subjects make me uncomfortable and I love it.

Do Good Things

Maryland born, New York based, currently doing work based on dream journals, Brea Souders. Her photographs stem from ideas based on the psychology of human nature, both conscious and unconscious. From her documentary work titled "Living Water" to her dream journal interpretations titled "Islands & Streams". Look at her work here. Also, there is an interview here.

Can I live wit' chu?

Oh Apartamento, I am quite fond of you. A quiet little magazine full of everyday life. Printed on matte paper and full of soft photographs of real spaces, cluttered and clean. I want to spend a little time in every space they portray.

Makes me Damp.

On a recent visit to yet another lunch break gallery, I wandered into the Bruce Silverstein Gallery. The current show is Leonard Freed, showing photographs of racially divided America. Nice show with classic B&W photos. Now on to the good stuff... I came upon, in the back room, this amazing photograph. It is rather large in size, incredibly sharp and beautifully printed. The photographer is Shinichi Maruyama, he creates amazing works utilizing liquids. He seems to effortlessly pull these dynamic shapes out of something so... well, shapeless. A visit to the gallery just for this one image is worth it.

Ein Maga Whaaaa?

Where to direct your gaze, when riding in a cramped, and crowded, subway train, can often be an issue. Staring at advertisements can only suffice ones attention for maybe two stops. I have come to enjoy reading over peoples shoulders. You are already pressed against them, why not become even more unified by enjoying the same piece of literature? Today I was able to enjoy Ein Magazin uber Orte, "a mono-thematic magazine, which was launched by Elmar Bambach, photographer Julia Marquardt and graphic designer Birgit Vogel." It is published in German and English. Each issue is based on a different location. A mixture of photographs, illustrations and text. I have yet to actually read it, but I will be heading to St. Mark's bookshop (the only listed U.S. seller) soon to take a closer gander. The above image is from the Kitchen issue.

Sophie Calle is by far one of my favorite artists. Her exhibition is going on now at the Paula Cooper Gallery in Chelsea, called "Take Care of Yourself". It centers around a break up letter, sent via email, from her then current, now ex, boyfriend. It becomes an object of inspiration for her. She asks multiple different women to translate it, in accordance with their own profession. The translations are then displayed through video, photography and written. You get a copy of the english translation when you enter the door. While the rest of the exhibit is largely French. The fact that I didn't know the language was not a hinderance. It puts more emphasis on the structure of the interpretation and the process of the interpreter. I highly recommend a visit. 534 W. 21st St.

Amy Stein

I can't believe I almost forgot about Amy Stein. An amazing NY photographer. The image above is from her domesticated series. She refers to them as "modern dioramas of our new natural history" in which she explores the new relationships between humans and animals. Her interviews and statements are evidence to the fact that her concepts and ideas are incredibly well thought out.

Jason John Wurm

Jason John Wurm is a photographer, and musician? Lives in NY? So I don't know much about him but I like his work. The unfortunate thing is that his site goes to a page for buying Zoloft, intentional? I am not sure. His work is nice and a decent coverage of it can be seen at Forsythian Press. Which Is an independent book distributer.

A different kind of Araki

Japanese photography is like translation, in visual terms. It has an incredibly distinct mood. I have seen more beautiful work from others, but never has an image drawn me to it more than those of the Japanese Photographers. This work is by Nobuyoshi Araki. His website is a bit odd, just google image search him for the best results. I encourage looking at Daido Moriyama's work as well.

The Big Picture

There is no doubt in the fact that as soon as something or anything finds its way the web, it is instantly everywhere. This site is a testament to that. As the creators Thomas Eberwein & Marc Kremers state "it is our creative response to the trillions of images on the internet." and respond they have! As-found is an amazing image bank. It exposes those spur of the moment, or thought out and just plain ridiculous, pictures that we all have taken. They have a way of making everything in your life seem normal.
